Houthi Attack on Cargo Ship in Bab al-Mandeb Claims Lives of Three Pakistanis

On Tuesday, a cargo ship named Tihamah, flying the Tanzanian flag, was reportedly attacked by Yemen's Houthi forces in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The attack resulted in the deaths of three Pakistani crew members and one Indonesian, according to statements from the Yemen Ministry and various news outlets.

Reports indicate that the Yemeni coastguard recorded a total of six fatalities related to the attack. This incident marks the first notable instance of deaths attributed to Houthi strikes on commercial vessels since July, as tension in the region continues to rise.

The Houthi forces have not issued any immediate comments regarding the attack, although video footage has surfaced showing the cargo ship engulfed in flames following the incident. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the vessel was targeted using ballistic missiles.

Following the attack, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar condemned the Houthi actions and announced that Islamabad is in contact with the relevant authorities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia to ascertain more details about the incident.

Dar stated that the Pakistani government offers its condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. Additionally, a directive has been issued for the repatriation of the remains of the three Pakistani nationals to their home country.

This incident has raised concerns over maritime safety in the region, particularly for shipping companies already facing challenges due to the ongoing conflict and the closure of other crucial shipping routes. The escalating frequency of such attacks presents an ongoing threat to international shipping operations.
