Jharkhand Students Protest Escalates with Arrests and Police Action
The ongoing student protests in Jharkhand face police crackdown, with a state-wide bandh announced by the BJP as tensions rise over alleged recruitment exam irregularities.
The student protests in Jharkhand, now entering their 17th day, have escalated significantly, marked by police actions against demonstrators demanding accountability for alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. A contingent of protesters attempted to march towards the Jharkhand Assembly, faced with significant police resistance that included the use of water cannons, baton charges, and tear gas, according to multiple reports.
In an aggressive response to the protests, authorities imposed prohibitory orders along a 4 km stretch leading to the Assembly, deploying heavy security. The police reported that some demonstrators turned violent, hurling stones at law enforcement as they attempted to breach barricades.
Additionally, the former chairperson of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), L Khiangte, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) amid the crisis, further intensifying the situation. Protesters are now demanding an independent probe into the alleged irregularities, calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry or an investigation conducted by a retired judge.
In response to the police crackdown, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) declared a state-wide bandh set for August 11. The party criticized the police's handling of the protests, referring to the use of force against students as

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the protesting students, condemning the police action and calling for the government to engage with the students to resolve their grievances. He remarked on social media that the use of force was inappropriate, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue between the government and the protesters.
