New Mexico Court Orders Meta to Pay Nearly $1 Billion Over Child Safety

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay an additional $567 million related to a case concerning child safety. This ruling comes during the second phase of a trial, which follows a previous decision in March where a jury assessed civil penalties against the company.

According to reports, this latest financial penalty is intended to support harm prevention and awareness initiatives for children and teenagers using Meta's platforms, which include Facebook and Instagram.

To date, Meta's total liabilities in this case have reached approximately $942 million. This amount comprises the newly mandated $567 million as well as a prior $375 million in civil penalties.

The court's findings determined that Meta's practices put young users at risk, prompting the order for significant financial redress. As the case develops, these fines underscore ongoing scrutiny of the company's impact on youth safety.
