India’s Russian Oil Imports Reach 48% Amid U.S. Tariff Threats
India’s imports of Russian crude oil have surged to 48%, coinciding with U.S. plans for up to 100% tariffs on such imports.
In June 2026, Russia accounted for a record 48% of India’s crude oil imports, as reported by The Hindu. This rise occurred despite a significant worldwide drop in overall crude oil imports by India.
India imported 8.7 million metric tonnes of Russian crude during this period. The UAE also saw a notable share of 17.5%, meaning that together, Russia and the UAE comprised nearly two-thirds of India's total oil imports.
The increase in imports comes against the backdrop of the United States preparing to impose tariffs of up to 100% on nations purchasing Russian oil and gas, following the expiration of a sanctions waiver on Russian crude.
